Civils Section Engineer (Contract)

Location: West London, close to a major international airport

About the Opportunity

Our client is a leading construction contractor with a long-standing presence on a major UK transport hub, delivering complex infrastructure projects to high standards of quality, safety and environmental performance. Working under a long-term framework, they deliver design and build projects across both airside and landside areas, including pavement rehabilitation, critical utilities replacement and the redevelopment of operational areas. The programme is ongoing, with further major resurfacing works in planning. Work is carefully planned around critical live assets, with close engagement across a wide range of stakeholders.

The Role

You will manage a section of the construction works, ensuring successful delivery in line with client requirements, programme objectives and business targets, while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety, quality, environmental compliance and cost control. Overseeing multiple work packages, you will work closely with the commercial team, site engineers, surveyors and wider stakeholders to deliver safely, efficiently and to specification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in promoting a strong health, safety and environmental culture
  • Supervise subcontractors, engineers and the workforce, ensuring approved RAMS and construction methods are followed
  • Review and verify setting out for accuracy and compliance
  • Mentor engineers on material testing, quality records, task briefings and inspections
  • Maintain high standards of engineering records, including survey documentation and site diaries
  • Attend and, where required, chair coordination meetings with stakeholders, subcontractors and internal teams
  • Check that drawings, specifications and 3D model information are complete and suitable for construction, raising RFIs promptly to avoid delays
  • Ensure ITPs are completed and digitally recorded in line with contractual requirements
  • Develop and monitor short-term programmes (2-4 weeks) with subcontractors and suppliers
  • Monitor site compliance with company policies and statutory requirements, promptly addressing unsafe conditions or non-conformances
  • Track plant, labour, material usage and programme performance
  • Prepare material take-offs, requisitions and procurement requirements, and manage material orders and records
  • Produce and review construction documentation, including method statements, ITPs, material approval requests and task briefings
  • Prepare temporary works design briefs and inspect temporary works, subject to appropriate training and authorisation
  • Build strong relationships with clients, designers, subcontractors and the wider supply chain
  • Communicate key construction information clearly to supervisors, foremen and operatives
  • Keep accurate records of instructions, variations and additional works, with supporting resource records
  • Ensure delivery tickets are correctly coded and submitted

Skills and Experience

  • Proven supervisory or engineering management experience in civil engineering, infrastructure or utility construction
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies and civil engineering best practice
  • Commercial awareness, with an understanding of contract administration and project controls
  • Experience in a cost-conscious environment, with responsibility for programme, resource and budget performance
  • Effective people management and leadership skills
  • Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating multiple work packages
  • Strong stakeholder management across clients, designers, suppliers and regulatory bodies
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to deliver practical construction solutions
  • Strong communication skills, with the confidence to engage at all levels
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and construction-related digital systems
  • Valid CSCS card

Desirable

  • Experience on airports or other critical operational areas
  • Experience influencing a wide range of stakeholders
  • Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent
