Job Description

CNC Setter / Operator / ProgrammerSiemens 840D | Heavy Engineering | Horizontal Boring & Milling

Location: Knottingley
Salary: Upto 50K DOE
Shift: Monday - Thursday 8am-4pm, Friday 8am - 1pm - OT Available at x1.5
Employment Type: Permanent

We are seeking an experienced CNC Setter / Operator / Programmer to join an established and growing heavy engineering business. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled machinist who is confident working with large, complex components and has strong experience programming, setting and operating CNC machinery.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in Siemens-controlled CNC machining, ideally with Siemens 840D, and will be comfortable working predominantly on large horizontal boring and milling machines.

This is a varied workshop environment, offering the opportunity to work on one-off components, repair work, specialist machining and large-scale engineering projects rather than repetitive production work.

The Role

As a CNC Setter / Operator / Programmer, you will be responsible for taking machining jobs from drawing through to finished component. You will be expected to confidently programme, set and operate CNC machinery, selecting the appropriate tooling, workholding and machining methods to achieve the required standards.

The role will be heavily focused on horizontal boring and milling, making this an excellent opportunity for an experienced CNC miller looking to develop further within heavy engineering.

Key Responsibilities
  • Programming CNC machinery using Siemens 840D controls
  • Setting and operating CNC horizontal boring and milling machines
  • Producing large and complex components from engineering drawings
  • Programming machines from drawings, specifications and customer requirements
  • Selecting appropriate cutting tools, workholding and machining strategies
  • Setting tools, offsets and work coordinates accurately
  • Carrying out first-off inspections and in-process checks
  • Measuring components using a range of precision inspection equipment
  • Working with a variety of materials and component sizes
  • Machining one-off and low-volume components to tight tolerances
  • Working from engineering drawings, tolerances and technical specifications
  • Troubleshooting machining, tooling and programme issues
  • Making programme adjustments and optimising machining cycles where required
  • Supporting other CNC machining operations across the workshop
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment
  • Working safely and confidently around large machinery, heavy components and lifting equipment
About You

We are looking for an experienced machinist who can demonstrate genuine programming, setting and operating experience rather than simply machine operation.

Ideally, you will have a strong background in CNC milling or horizontal boring, with experience working on large components within a heavy engineering, manufacturing, fabrication or specialist machining environment.

Essential / Desirable Experience
  • Proven experience as a CNC Setter / Operator / Programmer
  • Strong CNC milling experience
  • Experience programming CNC machines
  • Experience with Siemens controls, ideally Siemens 840D
  • Experience setting and operating CNC machinery
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings
  • Good understanding of cutting tools, speeds, feeds and machining techniques
  • Experience machining large or complex components
  • Ability to accurately measure and inspect finished components
  • Strong understanding of machining tolerances and engineering specifications
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make programme/tooling adjustments
  • A safety-conscious approach to working around large machinery
Highly Advantageous
  • Horizontal boring machine experience
  • 9 Axis exeperience
  • Heavy engineering experience
  • Large-component machining experience
  • Experience machining one-off or low-volume components
  • Experience with large CNC mills or boring mills
  • Broader CNC turning experience
  • Experience working with difficult or specialist materials
  • Experience with complex Siemens 840D programming
  • Experience working from customer drawings and manufacturing specifications
Why Join?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join an established engineering business where your machining skills will be genuinely valued.

Rather than being restricted to repetitive production work, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of technically challenging components and projects, developing your skills across large-scale CNC machining.

You will work alongside an experienced engineering team within a specialist facility, with the opportunity to contribute to the continued growth and development of the machining operation.

The company recognises that highly experienced CNC machinists with Siemens 840D, horizontal boring and large-component machining experience are difficult to find. Applications are therefore welcomed from skilled CNC millers and machinists who have strong transferable experience and are looking to develop their horizontal boring expertise.

The Ideal Candidate

You may currently be working as a:

CNC Programmer | CNC Setter | CNC Miller | CNC Machinist | CNC Setter/Operator | CNC Miller Programmer | Horizontal Borer | CNC Boring Mill Operator

If you have strong CNC milling experience, can programme and set machines confidently, and have experience with Siemens controls and larger-scale engineering, we would be keen to hear from you.

Apply today for a confidential discussion about the opportunity.
