About this role

This role is for a Wireman based in Melksham, working on a major National Grid project. The position involves supporting the installation, wiring, refurbishment and testing of electrical systems within high-voltage substation environments. Key responsibilities include carrying out panel wiring, control wiring and electrical installation works, as well as installing, terminating and connecting electrical cabling in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications. The Wireman will also assist with the installation, refurbishment and commissioning of electrical equipment, wiring and connecting National Grid equipment such as AIS and GIS switchgear, protection relay panels, LVAC boards and battery systems. The rate is £30 per hour.

Job Description



We are seeking experienced Wiremen to join a major National Grid project in Melksham, supporting the installation, wiring, refurbishment and testing of electrical systems within high-voltage substation environments.
Working as part of a specialist electrical team, you will be responsible for carrying out high-quality panel wiring, control wiring and electrical installation works while ensuring all activities are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with National Grid standards and project specifications.
This is an excellent opportunity to work on a major UK energy infrastructure project with a well-established engineering contractor.



Key Responsibilities


  • Carry out panel wiring, control wiring and electrical installation works within National Grid substations.

  • Install, terminate and connect electrical cabling in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Assist with the installation, refurbishment and commissioning of electrical equipment.

  • Wire and connect a range of National Grid equipment, including:

    • AIS and GIS Switchgear

    • Protection Relay Panels

    • LVAC Boards

    • Battery Systems

    • Transformers

    • Circuit Breakers

    • Disconnectors

    • Earth Switches

    • Current Transformers (CTs)

    • Voltage Transformers (VTs)

    • Telecommunications Equipment

    • Marshalling Kiosks

    • Supplies Pillars

    • Blockhouses

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and layout drawings.

  • Carry out cable routing, glanding and termination to a high standard.

  • Support testing, fault finding and commissioning activities where required.

  • Maintain accurate records of completed work.

  • Ensure all work complies with National Grid standards, Health & Safety legislation and company procedures.

  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and safe working practices.

  • Work collaboratively with supervisors, engineers and project teams to deliver works safely and efficiently.


Essential Skills & Experience


  • Previous experience working as a Wireman within National Grid, HV substations or industrial electrical environments.

  • Experience with panel wiring, control wiring and electrical installation.

  • Strong understanding of electrical drawings and wiring schematics.

  • Experience installing and wiring:

    • Protection Relay Panels

    • LVAC Boards

    • Switchgear

    • Transformers

    • Battery Systems

    • Control Panels

    • Marshalling Kiosks

    • Telecommunications Equipment

  • Experience carrying out cable glanding and termination.

  • Understanding of safe systems of work within high-voltage environments.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.


Essential Certifications


Candidates must hold the relevant National Grid authorisations and site competencies applicable to the project.
Ideally applicants will also hold:


  • National Grid Person (NG Person)

  • National Grid Competent Person/Authorised Person (where applicable)

  • ECS or CSCS Card

  • Manual Handling

  • Relevant Electrical Qualifications

  • Appropriate PPE for site attendance
